Need Help Learning SkullGirls (Ps3)

As the title suggests, really need some help learning skullgirls, ive decided to take a break from my main game (SFxT) and focus more of my time into this and Persona 4 arena when it comes out. Ive currently done all of the lessons in tutorial mode, and still dont get the hang of the combo system and how to make them. Just a starting point i guess is what i need or something who could possibly tell me the ins and outs of the game, what to do and what not to do sort of thing. The characters i feel most comfortable with are peacock and Ms Fortune, they may not work on the same tea,, but i really like them both. any help or tips guys that you could give would really more a lot. My psn is Nathan_Stathan.

This picture illustrates an idea I had for One of Feng's super moves. This move takes advantage of both birds/Phoenix things, it'll probably be a level 2 or 3 super and enhances all of her normals and specials for a period of 20-25 seconds (unless that's too long).

Above is an illustration of how the start up animation could look. I'll describe what's happening in each image below.

1. This is just part of the idle animation (I know it looks very boring)
2. This is near the start of the super animation, she removes the birds from her hair and takes a stance ready to combine them (I didn't know much about the birds but I'm assuming the have ghost like properties, so forgive me for inaccuracies)
3. The two birds are combined and released from their bird forms (yet again I'm assuming a lot here)
4. The two entities are separated again resembling ectoplasm or some thing
5. This is the result of the super, basically they orbit in a clockwise direction. If the player remains still it will continue spinning till the 10 seconds are over

When activated both Phoenix orbit the user, depending on which Phoenix is directly in front of feng her immediate attack will be filled with its power. Regardless of which Phoenix is used however, they both extent the range of her moves (similar to lucario in SSBB when he receives more damage) as well as changing the properties of certain moves ie some moves causing stagger stages that couldn't before. I am assuming that her attacks take a while to come out so that the extra range isn't abused.

Outside of the range increase the Black and the White Phoenix have very different properties when used in moves. To aid in this demonstration below is a special move performed without activating the super (I tried basing it off of makoto's bullet punch move, yeah it's not perfect)

When performing the same move with the white Phoenix directly in front of her, it grants her the ability to regain a little more health with every strike. The damage dealt by the move stays the same. Illustration below.

Now performing the same move with the black Phoenix, it grants more damage than normal at the cost of recoil damage. Illustration below

Performing either of these will not stop the other Phoenix from orbiting, so mashing buttons to get the same ability again quickly will not be easy. Rather combos require timing to maximise damage or to recover the max amount of health. I don't know what kind of character she would be so in game these ideas might not work well.

One last detail, when the super is activated and she is swapped to another character the effects remain and when feng is called as an assist the ability still enhances her attacks. However since the wheel still turns even when the character is off screen it's hard to tell if the attack is amplified with the black or white Phoenix power, this mean if you are low on HP mashing the assist could kill you as the effect of the Phoenix is passed onto the active character

Phew that was a lot of work putting this together, all of this was done on an iPad (even drawings). Any way I hope something like this creates more interest in the character when it comes time to vote.

Skullgirls Salty Cupcakes w/ Maximilian

So I was watching the Salty Cupcakes stream and listened to the conversation between Mike Z and Maximillian talking about the good old days of gaming. My first impression is that these guys are total dinosaurs, the fact that I understood everything they were talking about made me feel old myself.

The first thing that I find interesting about Mike Z's personality, is that there is no off switch on his game designer brain. I never heard a person dislike a game based purely of the how the developers implemented their hit stun deterioration mechanics. And not surprisingly, Mike loves games that are extremely technical (MvC2, GGXX, 3rd Strike). He's good at most games, and even talked about how he was winning tournaments with Zangief in SF4, but he wasn't enjoying it. Even though SF4 is clearly one of the most popular fighting games, Mike Z seems to dislike it solely due to it's design.

However, I disagree his conclusion that today's fighting games are more "dumbed down" is due to the fact that the developers are lazy or don't play their own games. The truth is that even though I agree that the time of MvC2, GGXX, and 3rd Strike were the golden years of gaming, these games will never return. The problem with making a fighting engine extremely deep and technical is that incidentally it's also much more difficult to play! The designers of GGXX themselves said that their game was too complex, which is why they designed Blazblue to be much more simplified version of GGXX, and I know a lot of GG players (all?) hate BB.

Basically, these badly designed new generation of fighting games with mechanics that arbitrarily restrict player skill sound horrible from a game design perspective, but they are also incredibly popular and profitable with newer players. Now Skullgirl's design makes a lot more sense to me. It's not really simply a niche doujin fighter with marvel mechanics, it's literally a homage (revival?) to old school fighting games.

Hey guys, voting 2 has started today. It's shorter and with a new voting system. You have only 3 DAYS to vote and you'll rank the characters you like. After the initial 30 characters (no Juju due to the legal complications), the next round will be the Top-20 and then the Top-10.

I would like also to voice my support as a competitive player to D.Violet, cuz she has many awesome ideas and inspirations, and I looooove her Force Crouch mechanic. That thing would be specially awesome to see in action and to allow lots of crazy setups and mixup possibilities.

You can vote for everyone you like, but since it's a ranking system, consider keeping D.Violet as high as possible on your list if you want to show some support to this mechanic. If the dominatrix/sensual themes are too much for you and you don't feel ready for it, that's okay, it's your issues, but remember that the FGC has many icons that follows the same suit (Mai, Morrigan, Cammy, Juri, Poison, etc.). Mike was also wanting to make a gameplay prototype for Violet, but unfortunately I don't think he'll have enough time to do it (Thanks MS).

ABOUT DEEP VIOLET and MRS VICTORIA:

As most of you may already know, Mrs. Victoria, the teacher at Filia's school and our great master in the Tutorial modes, and the horned devil lady known as D.Violet are actually different sides of a same coin. Yup, they're essentially the same person.

D.Violet is a super heroine-esque / vigilante persona of Mrs. Victoria. While by day she teaches the children and wanna be fighting gamers to become the greatest they can be, by night she hunts criminals, mob members and Skullgirl's minions with her deadly living weapon the Pazuzu Whip.

There are still lots of mystery surrounding D.Violet and Mrs. Victoria and it sure would be great to see them revealed and fleshed out.

PLAYSTYLE AND GAMEPLAY INSPIRATIONS:

A former crime fighter pulled into the web of intrigue woven around the latest Skullgirl. Deciding it was too much for her stuffy civilian identity, she takes up her Living Weapon, the Pazuzu Whip, to don her alter ego once more.

Playstyle Speculation

She may be less inhibited, but she still enjoys having control. Lick those boots!

Despite being a heroic character, her general attack style would have a pagan and demonic motif to it as well as a dominating aspect. Of course, she’d also be able to do some long distance attacks with her versatile snake whip. The weapon can grow multiple snake heads and change in rigidity as needed.

D. Violet may do special animations on herself in order to power up. If she reaches an intense enough level, she gains the ability to unleash wilder attacks. Similarly, she can curse the enemy with special attacks, putting them in a humiliation state and making them vulnerable to devastating special attacks. If the balance of power swings entirely in Violet’s direction, everything from their posture on up is in her complete control!

WHY VOTE D.VIOLET:

- One of her gameplay mechanics revolve around a Humiliation Meter and the possibilities that will open after having D.Violet in complete control of her opponent's morale.

- One of those possibilities is the Force Crouching.

- D.Violet can issue commands to the opponents and force them to crouch (therefore being vulnerable to overhead attacks).

- And she'll have others and it can be played around in many ways: She could force landings, assist calls, stuns, walking forward and whatever comes up in Mok's head.

- D.Violet has awesome gameplay possibilities and tons of resources that could be very deadly.

- Her moves would interact with other characters in the case, some of them will be for the special meter's sake. They'll probably require some new short animations and poses for the rest of the cast as well.

- Her whip influences could work for her mobility options (Spider-Man) and mid to long range spatial control.

- She was supposed to have a full demon form too, I'm not sure if that's still in though, where she's a gorgon Medusa.

- Her Zappa, Order Sol and Fatal K.O. influences could mean a full cool looking (and super impractical) instant kill animation just for the fun.

- Whip and Vice influences can also represent a strong mix between ranged and close rushdown.

- The Pazuzu Whip can assume many forms and works as a Serpent, who knows, maybe Poisons will be in her repertoire.

- Johnny Cage, Bayonetta, Poison etc influences? You know that will have all sorts of fun and hilarious results. xD

Did I buy this game on the wrong platform?

Last I heard the Slightly Different Edition patch was still "in approval" on Xbox 360. Now Squigly is starting to be finalized, which probably means more clog on the 360 front once she's finished.

I know MS is pretty mean about getting content approved for Xbox LIVE Marketplace but I never thought they'd be this hard to work with.

Minette. Take a look at her for a second.

What do you see here? I see someone who's ready to take on any challenge, whether it be serving the best food Little Innsmouth has to offer, or to take her profession to the battlefield. She is also seen as a cute girl who needs protection, as Ms. Fortune and Yu-Wan protects her with the utmost compassion. However, this is not necessarily true, for she is now being given a chance to stand up for herself and show everyone exactly what a daughter of the River King can do.
Minette can bring much to the cast of Skullgirls in the story and gameplay parts of the game. Her design also fits the "art style" of Skullgirls. Let's go through these points, shall we?

Story:
At the end of Ms. Fortune's story, Nadia comes back and is surprised to find out that Minette had been kidnapped, and sets out immediately to find her. Scene change to Minette's point of view. If included in the game, we would be able to see how she got kidnapped, why, and where she was taken. This will allow us to see into the Medici Mafia's inner workings, possibly garnering more info on the Mafia characters (Black Dahlia, Ottomo, all of the Cirque Des Cartes members except Hubrecht). Imagine if Black Dahlia was the warden for the daughters of the River King, and through Minette's story, you hear what the Medici's have planned for the daughters, or maybe Lorenzo Medici took them as a ransom for something else...
As you can see, Minette could possibly bring a lot out into the light, only being rivaled in story strength by Isaac or Marie. Similar to those two, Minette has a style all her own. Let's talk about that next.

Gameplay:

This video shows gameplay from a character called Coyori, a character from a game called Battle Fantasia. Her stance (holding the platter effortlessly while fighting), and her broom attacks coupled with attacks with a pan (like Peach in SSBB) might be some stuff Minette would do herself.

Our favorite waitress from Yu-Wan's Restaurant has a few tricks up her apron to bring to the roster of Skullgirls. Her style is built around her profession, just doing her job while her customers fight for her in various ways.
Here's where one of her inspirations comes in, Kyosuke: image

Looking at him at first glance, he looks like he has little to do with Minette herself, but her customers might garner their attacks from his patterns. Also, Mike Z has presented the possibility of him, the rest of the team and other characters in the game appearing as Minette's customers. (We might even get a Mike Zammich reference!)


They would also help her by giving her tips, which gives her "confidence" (akin to "evidence" for Wright and "PP" for Frank). Getting enough of this "confidence" grants her the power to overcome her weaknesses. This means she will start out clumsy at Level 1 and get less and less clumsy. Being the daughter of the River King, this max confidence level could possible bring out her feral side. Look at the River King here (he is to the left of Eliza, right above Valentine):

If Minette is related to that by blood, it could open up some really cool Dagonian power type stuff (like vicious bites, water powers, etc). She might even undergo some kind of transformation...
This possible feral transformation is not what Minette is about on the surface, though. You can see what she is all about as by looking at her design, which we will talk about next.

Design:
Minette's design is, admittedly, very underwhelming at first sight. Although, it is a simple design, it goes straight to the point. An apron and head necklace with a shell (probably to represent her Dagonian heritage). Nothing more, nothing less. Her design gives you the sense of where's she's from, and what she's all about: a hard working Dagonian just doing what she does best. This simple pure design fits into the art style Skullgirls goes for (this point can be up for grabs, as is whether the design of a character is good or not is purely an opinion).

In conclusion, Minette is a character that might not be the sexiest, or the strongest, but she has a charm all her own that could really breathe fresh air into Skullgirls and into fighting games as a whole. I realize you all have your favorite characters, and I respect that. In this coming vote, I suggest that you vote for Minette. Vote for fun gameplay. Vote for Mike Z as an attack. Vote for customer service. Vote for this Dagonian princess. Vote Minette.

I just downloaded the Skullgirls game from PS Store and after 6KB..yes 6KB of data, it says the game is fully downloaded. I tried to download it again and it says 'download complete' at that exact same kb of data. I can't find the game anywhere in my system and i'm scared I put £11.99 down the drain. Can u guys tell me what just happened??

She is really awesome, and she is a teacher who'll mimick other fighting game moves. I really want to see her do a shoryoken and a sonic boom.

Also as nice as she was to teach us how to play the game the least we could do is have her in the game as a playable character lol
